Readers’ Favourite Gay Books – 2010

Our newest update is here! Thanks again to everyone who submitted additional recommendations for the Readers’ Favourite Gay Books. Wren Boudreau did a wonderful job incorporating your new recommendations with the previous list and I would like to thank her on behalf of all the M/M readers. The list is now 400+ books, at least two thirds of which you selected and I know that readers of M/M romances and other gay books will appreciate your contributions. As mentioned earlier, this is not a Top 400 list, it’s a list of favourite M/M books from you, supplemented by many of mine.
We have maintained the same categorization system to make it easy for you to find the books and I hope that this list will continue to be an excellent reference source for you, the readers. All of the different gay sub genres are here including memoirs and other books of social significance such as Armistead Maupin’s wonderful commentary about life in San Francisco in the 1970s – Tales of the City - a memorable period of gay and also US history.
As mentioned previously, all paranormal and fantasy books have been grouped under Speculative Fiction, but the other categories are very familiar to you. A few books on the list are extremely violent and some have no HEA so buyer beware and check the reviews on sites such as amazon or Barnes & Noble!
So here’s your updated list of Readers’ Favourite Gay Books which combines your recommendations and the original 118 books.
Many of the books on the list have withstood the test of time and have been around as readers’ favourites for 25 or more years (The Catch Trap by Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren, The Charioteer by Mary Renault are excellent examples) and more recent favourites such as the PsyCop series by Jordan Castillo Price, the Adrien English Mysteries by Josh Lanyon, My Fair Captain by J.L. Langley, The Draegan Lords by M.L. Rhodes, to name just a few.

Author Information

Oh, the comments for the Gay Favorites update are closed?
I’ve been so busy and stressed these last weeks and I remembered something about September and I thought it was end of September.
Anyway.
Some of my all time favorites (which are listed, among others I also like very much):
The Charioteer by Mary Renault
The Catch Trap by Marion Zimmer Bradley
At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O’Neill
As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann
Adrien English Series by Josh Lanyon
NEW:
Code of Conduct by Rich Merritt (C)
Carried Away: An SM Romance by David Stein (C)
Cut to the Bone by Robert Conner (C/Crime)
It Takes Two by Elliott Mackle (C/Crime)
Street Lavender by Chris Hunt (H) (published late 80s)
The Gentleman and the Rogue – Bonnie Dee and Summer Devon (H)
Tim and Pete by James Robert Baker (C) (1993)
The Year of Ice by Brian Malloy (C / YA) (C)
The World of Normal Boys by K.M. Soehnlein (C / YA)
Those (C / YA) are about young adults, but I don’t think they are really adressed at young adults.
Young Adult
Ich, Adrian Mayfield by Floortje Zwigtman (H) (Dutch or German available)
Eine Welt dazwischen / We Two Boys by Aline Sax (H) (the original is Belgian, available in German, should be available in English)
Northridge High Football Camp (YA)
Eight Seconds by Jean Ferris (YA)
I didn’t have time to check my (incomplete / always WIP) list of books, so that’s it for now. I would have lots more books to recommend which I enjoyed and liked very much, but which is a little bit less than the “absolutely love” criteria.
Wow–what a wonderful list! I especially love the classic and the YA sections, and I can not tell you how honored I am to see some of my work included:-)
Hi Amy
Obviously the fans love your books. What can I say?
Oh my gosh- what a list! Wren and Wave, thanks for your hard work. Will retirement and days of unapologetic, non-stop reading ever come? I will have to keep working in order to keep buying books!
Patty
No worries – I’m sure some of them will still be there when you retire. LOL make sure you retire to a desert island where you can’t buy any new books.
That’s just it, Wave. These terrific authors just don’t seem to slow down. I continue to add the new books to the existing list. I think my TBR pile will BE the island-LOL!
Holy reading batman! What a great list! Some of my absolute favorites and some new ones I. Must. Have. Soon! I think I know what I will be doing for the next however long it takes me lol! My thanks to you Wave and everyone that worked so hard to compile this list….and for all the hard work you all do every other day of the year too! Awesome! as always
Elaine
No more new books for you until you whittle down the TBR pile. LOL
Glad you like the new list. Wren worked her butt off for you guys.
This is a wonderful piece of work – thank you. I had been using the original list to find good reads and to make sure I was reading some of the classics. I’m really grateful to have it updated.
I wondered if you have a downloadable file/spreadsheet as so many of us intend to use it as a reading list.
Thank you once again.
RachelT
thank you. It was mostly other readers’ recs., mine and Wren’s hard work.
I haven’t got as far as a making up a separate file/spreadsheet since this was hard enough. But that will be step 2.
I’ve converted the article into 3 spreadsheets (claic, current and YA) and also exported it to a Word table. Happy to pass it on if anybody can make use of it.
great listing, I plan to take a look at many I haven’t seen before, I did not see one of my submissions “Aloes by Chris Quinton” on the list, will it be added to later?
Thanks!
rdafan7
That was definitely an error because I, too, love Aloes. It has since been added to the list.
There are other books that were left off for various reasons but this was not one of them.
Great! Thanks for adding it in, I like to be sure authors get their recognition!
It is becoming quite the list with some very good books!!
I forgot to mention
Just Desserts & Second Helpings
by Scarlet Blackwell
Wow! Just in time to save me. Came on, after being overcommitted to the world for too long – to catch up and look for recommendations on a pile of reads to take me through the Summer – This should do and dave me a lot of time. Much appreciate it.
Hi Mel
Thanks for commenting. We will be updating this list soon since it’s been a while so check back in about 3 months or so when the revised list should be online.
On Kindle THE HELLESPONT, a love stpry with tragic consequences
Also Magic lobsters and flying tagines: about Morocco on Kindle
Or rather FLYING LOBSTERS AND MAGIC TAGINES! KINDLE
ALSO THE HELLESPONT ON KINDLE – A GAY LOVE STORY ABOUT TWO SCHOOL FRIENDS – PERHAPS A TEAR JERKER BUT FULL OF INFO ABOUT GREEK MYTHS
I also loved the Hellespont which I read on the beach off a friend’s kindle. But I couldn’t download the jacket… but still.
I read both James Whaley’s books on Kindle and loved The Hellespont and Also Flying Lobsters… I discovered them on a blog called gayartz on google!
