Summary: Buffy meets first teenage romance in this hilarious story with two adorable Chosen Ones

Blurb:

Sparks fly between virgin teenage demon hunters when the Chosen One turns out to be the Chosen . . . Two?

Apprentice warrior Blake St. Blake is the Chosen One, raised by an ancient order to defend the world against evil. Well, maybe not the whole world, but at least his neighborhood in downtown Detroit. When a dreaded reflux demon is sighted in a local cemetery, Blake is sent off to his very first battle, armed with his sword, his super-senses, his black leather duster, and a few well-rehearsed one-liners.

But another Chosen One gets in Blake’s way—an apprentice wizard named Shadow. While the boys argue about who’s the more chosen of the two, the demon escapes.

Blake wants to be angry, but it turns out he and Shadow have a lot in common. Besides, Shadow’s pretty cute, and Blake can’t help but think that the wizard’s skills (and hands and lips and other bits) might make the perfect complement to his. Blake and Shadow are brave enough to challenge the reflux demon in a second battle, but will they have the courage to tell each other how they feel?

Review:

“If you will not return to Hell immediately, then you leave me no choice. I must slay you. I mean, thee.” My cheeks heated and I cursed myself for screwing up the wording. My first demon and I was getting it all wrong. I could hear Hadley’s voice in my head telling me to just breathe and take it easy. Okay. I drew in deep, calming breath, only to start coughing. God this thing needed a tic tac.”

This was a little snippet to give you a taste of the Chosen One and his first significant task. ;)

After Harry Potter I will always have a soft spot for stories which have the theme of the “Chosen One,” especially when the young person is a main character. The idea of said young person saving the world from….erm whatever evil comes along, just really appeals to me if done well, so of course I could not resist this short tale. I absolutely adored how it poked some gentle fun at Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I also really liked both boys and thought that they had great chemistry from the moment they met.

I think I also really liked this author’s take on what it means to be the Chosen One. I thought their battle with the demon was hysterically funny, which was not a surprise for me, since this author’s humor so far always worked for me. I really liked how excitement and poking fun were mixed with awkward, but so adorable first teenage romance. I really want these two guys to have a future together, but thankfully the author does not make eighteen-year-olds swear eternal love to each other (actually now I am wondering whether they were eighteen, because both guys mention “just reaching age of majority”, but I am wondering now whether they meant that they are sixteen or eighteen).

Lastly, I thought a little twist at the end of the story was a really amusing nice touch.

Riptide seems to be doing a lot of serialised stories, and this one can easily serve as the beginning of the series, but it also easily stands as stand alone.

Highly recommended.

Yay, sounds good and like my kind of paranormal :)
Am a bit concerned about their age, but they’re legal so I can cope
Just to be clear, no shifters or vampires?

I pre-ordered this one since the Riptide titles have been good bets, and of course the Chosen humor. After your review I’m really looking forward to it!

I wish it was much longer too Larissa, but for the length I thought it was very good, you know? The writer managed to invoke a real sympathy for the both guys from me and I thought it was very funny.
