A guest review by Lasha

Summary: Wonderfully sweet movie about a middle-aged man who discovers his true self for the first time. Plus, a puppy that will melt any cynic’s heart!

BLURB

At age 55, Philadelphia CEO Paul Grecco (Lindstrom) decides to make changes in his life, including the sale of his company, and that terrifies him. He was right to be terrified, because the new owners force him to retire early. His sister, Elise (Malick) decides that the best things for him is a puppy she has gotten him, and dating the women that Elise sets Paul up with. It’s funny though, but Paul finds himself disinterested in the women Elise fixes him up with, and oddly fascinated by a young man (Murrah) he meets while walking his new puppy in the park across from his condo. Paul has never really thought about dating or sex before, with anyone, so now what should he do?

THE REVIEW

I had this in my Netflix queue for awhile, now I only wish I had watched it earlier. What Happens Next takes us on a journey with Paul Grecco, who after retiring doesn’t have any idea what to do with his life. As a retirement present his sister Elise gets him a dog (the cutest French Bulldog) which he names Mrs. Grecco. One day in the park, he runs into another dog owner, Andy and they begin a friendship, meeting every morning to sit on a park bench while their dogs plays with each other. Eventually, Paul begins to realize he’s attracted to Andy and the two decide to date, but Paul’s not ready to leave his closet and Andy wants a relationship built on honesty…so what happens next?

With a delightful cast, featuring Jon Lindstrom (General Hospital, As the World Turns) as middle-aged, stuck-in-his-ways CEO Paul Grecco who despite having all the money in the world is having a sexual identity crisis. His busy-body, slightly neurotic sister Elise, played by Wendie Malick (Hot in Cleveland) and this movie has some genuinely touching moments between the siblings. Add in the cute chemistry between Chris Murrah and Jon Lindstrom, whose May-December relationship carries the film and you spend a good time laughing and the other wanting Paul and Andy to finally pull their heads out of their behinds and get together! And while the romance takes time to develop, I think it makes perfect sense since Paul’s coming out was so late in life. For a movie that was made on a string budget while being filmed on location in Philadelphia, What Happens Next is a wonderful treat for any independent movie lover that proves you don’t need a big budget to have a quality movie. After Shelter and Latter Days, What Happens Next has easily moved into my ‘Top Ten Gay-Themed Movies of All Time!’

So, if you are in the mood for a light romantic comedy with a m/m element, then look no farther as What Happens Next is it. You can rent it at Amazon or take a chance and buy the DVD. Either way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

OVERALL

A sweet movie that centers on the relationship between the main characters and how they deal with a big change in their life. Great acting, a funny script and a super cute dog all make for an enjoyable movie.

Lasha: I’m watching the movie now on Netflix following your review. At the 30 min. mark, Andy just said that his deceased brother Harvey, dead almost 15 years, took him to his first gay club. How could that be? Andy would have to be in his mid-30s & he’s definitely not. How old is Andy? I’m all confused now. πŸ˜•

You have to stop spending my money Lasha. πŸ˜€ I can’t rent this movie from Amazon since I live in Canada so I’ll have to buy it, but it seems like a great way to spend a buck.

Thank you for this heartfelt review. 😎
