How Well-Read Are You?

(This is not my idea, it’s Tam’s. If you want to blame anyone for making you work please don’t send your angry emails to me. *g*)

How Well Read Are You?

Tam well read 2Or perhaps this should be more aptly titled, “How good is your memory?”. Just for fun I have created a quiz based on m/m authors and the stories they have published. I randomly picked 60 authors (If I missed you or one of your favourites I apologise. I could easily have gone to 100 but I was getting a cramp in my mouse finger.) and then listed 5 titles in multiple choice format.

Your job is to match the title to the author. All of the titles listed are real m/m titles and fairly recent (nothing obscure from 1953) and I didn’t make any up to trick anyone.  I think the authors are all relatively well-known if not household names. I personally have read at least 80% of the titles/authors I chose. As a relative newbie to the genre I don’t think I could be accused of being too obscure, although I did include short stories along with full length novels so that might make it a bit more of a challenge. If you see a title that interests you but don’t know the author, all of them can be found on Good Reads. However, if you have difficulty matching it up with an author (their search engine can be a bit vague) let me know and I can give you the info.

I have included a link to each author’s website/blog/livejournal/etc. (that I could find) so if you want to find out more about an author or their available works you can simply click on their name. It should open in a new window which I know you won’t look at until after you’ve finished the quiz, because cheating is baaaad. :-)

After you have taken the quiz, come back and post your score so that we can applaud your brilliance (or mock your ignorance – I’m kidding, I’d never mock you … much). Hope you have fun and perhaps you will discover a new-to-you author or a new story that will pique your interest and expand your m/m horizons.

I scored 73% the 2nd time I did the test. First time I had 71%. So there is improvement.

    • Tam says:

That’s pretty good Ingrid. If you don’t read a lot of shorts I think it can be a bit difficult. Gold star for you. :-)

  2. Lexin says:

My result was dire. Must read more.

  3. elianara says:

I got 58 %, but I blame my bad memory for details for that.

Have to say there where about 8 authors I hadn’t read at all too.

But I have to complain about question 55 about TC Blue, there is a small mistake in the answer. It’s small, tiny really, but still bothered me.

  4. Christian says:

I have to read more, too. I only got 23 answers correct… *hurries of to buy all the books on the Readers’ Favourite Gay Books list*

  5. Ethan Day says:

I officially suck! LOL. That was fun though. Great idea, TAM. Luckily, I didn’t put my name in, so there’s no proof of just how bad I suck. But it was somewhere in the thirty-schmal percent range. : )

It became so bad and I wound up getting so confused that for the last 20 or so, if I didn’t know the answer I stopped guessing and just chose the title I like best out of the five options given.

Thanks for the much needed Sunday morning distraction. Now I can go back to work!

  6. Tam says:

Glad you had fun Ethan even if I confused you. Choosing the title you liked best is not a bad option. :-)

  7. Lily says:

LOL, now I know I read too much. 90% score 54 out of 60 correct. :)

  8. nichem says:

Whoa, I got 92%. Obviously I’m reading waaaay too much. :P

  9. Ally Blue says:

OMG, I’m afraid to take it. The past couple of years have been so crazy for me, I haven’t read nearly as much as I’ve wanted to and I’m afraid my score will suck bigger, hairier donkey balls than anyone O_O
    **is a ginormous coward**

  10. Chris says:

Oy. I’m blaming my terrible memory. That’s it.

  11. Eyre says:

I am so ashamed! I only got a 57 (well, a 56.67, but I do believe in round up)!

  12. Wave says:

    Tam
If I take the quiz and I suck and then lie about it will you be able to tell?*g*

    • Tam says:

ROFL Not if you don’t put your name in. :-) It will come up as guest (from Canada) or if you go to the link then you’ll be completely anonymous. You’re call, but I’m sure you’ll do well. :-)

  13. Leslie says:

I did lousy but I’ll just blame it on the fact that I’m reading all these classic books instead. :-)

  14. gaycrow says:

LOL. Well, I’m a complete failure. I gave up at Question 12, because I hadn’t heard of many of the authors, let alone known the books they’d written.

    *hides*

(It’s the same thing with the new Rainbow Awards – I stopped voting because I just don’t know 98% of the authors. I must be living under a rock or something. :-( )

  15. Batboy126 says:

I looked through the quiz, just out of curiosity. I get a score of Functionally Illiterate, since I only recognized the names of 3 or 4 authors, and nearly none of the titles.
I did recognize Josh Lanyon, whom I’m *trying* not to think of as an M/M Romance writer, although he’s not making it any easier. And Z. A. Maxfield, who’s made herself and her work known to me recently.

    • Wave says:

      Batboy
Did you really do the quiz? Why??? You know nothing about M/M romance as you tell me everything we have a conversation about these books.

      *

Out of curiosity, how would you categorise Josh’s books? There is a fair amout of hot sex in them so they are not straight (did I say that?) mysteries or whatever else he writes.:)

      • Batboy126 says:

Wave quote:”Did you really do the quiz? Why???”
        Just curious. And idle.
        .
Wave quote >”Out of curiosity, how would you categorise Josh’s books? There is a fair amount of hot sex in them so they are not straight (did I say that?) mysteries or whatever else he writes.”
I mostly just read his mysteries, and I’d categorize them as mysteries. Lots of mystery novels, probably most, have hot sex, romance, or relationship angst included as part of the plot. Often a fairly major part. That doesn’t disqualify them as mysteries when the characters involved are straight, and it shouldn’t when they’re gay.
(Incidentally, I own the older, pre-sex-augmentation versions of the first 2 Adrien English Mysteries, which are certainly mystery novels and nothing but.)

    • Tam says:

Ah well, 3 or 4 is better than none. :-)

  16. wren says:

I scored 80%. Not so high to make me worry that I read too much, not so low to make me feel like a maroon. Thanks, Tam, for helping me pass the time while I cough and sniffle my way through the day.

    • Wave says:

      Wren
So glad you passed. I’m still afraid to take the test unless Tam promises not to let anyone know if I fail miserably.

      • Tam says:

Ingrid is my new wingman. She knows what I like. :-)

Stop being a wimp and take the test. I swear I’ll say you got nearly 90% (100% would be supicious) even if you fail miserably, but I doubt it. :-)

    • Tam says:

Well done Wren. Gold star. Sorry you are feeling sickly. Hope you are better soon.

  17. Ingrid says:

Wave as our m/m guru and review site head honcho you will have to take the test *g*

Maybe there is a way to bribe Tam if the results are not to your liking? A batch of yaoi will work miracles I think.
ooh and “cookies”, you know pics that can’t be on your friday selection and therefore are gathering dust in your files

    • Wave says:

Ingrid I do intend to take the test but in the meantime I have a few posts to finish, including my weekly update.

      **

Those naked pics were given to me by Tam in the first place so I can’t use them to bribe her:)

  18. Kris says:

Do you know that I woke up to an email from Tam to say that ‘oh, btw, Lily – and I see that Nichem did too – beat your results’.
    *
Now, I ask you – what kind of best mate does that to someone first thing on a Monday morning?!
    *
I haven’t even had my morning coffee yet. *pouts*

  19. Wave says:

I scored 87, and Tam you can check that I didn’t cheat. What was your score, eh? I think that’s pretty good. I’m not up to Lily’s standard but a couple of the authors I had never read any of their books so guessed wrong. I think I did OK. Now leave me alone!!!

    • Tam says:

Excellent score Wave. To my embarrassment I didn’t even score 100% which considering I knew the answers I should have. But I wasn’t paying attention to the Andrew Grey one and clicked the wrong button. Ooops. :-) I knew the yaoi one (Japanese name) would pretty much ensure no one got 100% without some guessing. Gold star for you.

  20. Amanda says:

I did awful but I am going to put a good spin on it. This just means I have plently of good reading ahead.

  21. Emilie says:

I did poorly. There were a few authors whose books I either own all of, or am saving to get the ones I don’t have. Those I did well with. Mostly, I could rule out two or three of the titles in a question as being written by another author, but guessed wrong between the two or so I’d narrowed it down to. I got it right for almost all of the books I’d read, with a mistake or two from going too fast. And there were a few books that are so well-known — or infamous — that I remembered the author although I hadn’t read the book. I figure I did well enough considering the limits of my budget and habit of sticking with authors I’ve already read, if I liked their previous books.

    • Tam says:

You’re right Emilie, some I chose were pretty well-known. I didn’t want to make it too tricky.
      *
For general interest I’ll say the Josh Lanyon question was answered correctly the most, 90% of the time and the Vic Winter question the least often, only 20% of the time.

  22. Hah, I got a lame 27%, which is basically chance plus the few I actually knew. Hey, I’m a n00b, what can I say? :D

    • Tam says:

Now you’ve got something to work towards. Everyone starts somewhere. A year ago I would NEVER have gotten even 50%. Hanging out here and at a few other blogs has been an education to the genre.

  23. Aunt Lynn says:

65%. Pretty crappy. :( Many of them I guessed, and for most of the guesses, I knew some of the titles couldn’t be for that author. But I still did not so great.

  24. Sharvie says:

Yikes, I thought I’d do better than a 31. *face palm* Guess I’ve got some reading to catch up on.

  25. John says:

Well, at least I got my favorite author right, Falling by M.L. Rhodes. I had just reread that one so I would have ended my embarrassment then and there with a wrong answer. 17 out of 60, 23%. I guessed at most of them and choose the last option when I didn’t have a clue and still got some right.

    • Tam says:

Ah well John, definitely a great author to be reading. Even random choices will get you a right answer sooner or later. :-)

  26. Tam says:

Hey, did anyone notice that woman in the picture I found is actually reading her book upside down? LOL The name is on the back and the front is blank. Too funny. You’d think the model would notice she’s holding a book upside down.

  27. Mary M. says:

Well, I got 58% – exactly the average score. It did made me feel better to learn that, as I personally felt I was apalling as I answered the test and got wrong answer after wrong answer. Tam, you’re a meanie to include so many best-selling titles from the most popular authors and then when that author’s turn comes up, the right answer is some lesser-known title I usually haven’t read. I’m sure you did it on purpose :-D D Thanks for putting this together, it was great fun :) .

  28. JL Merrow says:

    *takes test*
    *hangs head in shame*

Can I make the excuse that I’ve been too busy writing to read much? ;D

  29. Larissa says:

    Well that was dramatic…

  30. Ingrid says:

Gewoon doorgaan Larissa :) as a famous dutch/british guy always said

  31. feliz says:

    oj vej….
I’m a case of blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally, or so it seems.
    ….23%…
And there I thought I read a lot (let me under your rock, gaycrow, please….)

  32. Crystal says:

Tam, great idea! I completed test twice- because unsure how to post score :) well, I think my score was somewhere between 71-74% which means I’m not as well read as I originally thought *g* ..or maybe need to get different interest?? I signed in both times if you want to look for laughs… I am going place some of the blame on jenre bc not too long ago she brought up the whole” watching m/m anime… :D anyone else see that post and check out Junjou?? or Okane Ga Nai?? **Those things are addicting **If so, what did you think?? I know off subject.. back to test , loved it think you should do more. As always, enjoy this blog- though often just *ghost thru* :)

    • Tam says:

Thanks Crystal. Who knows, some day another one might show up on here. :-) I need to give my mouse clicking finger a break as I was going back and forth between sites and my files to find names. LOL
      *
I loved Junjo Romantica on-line. If you want a more “graphic” one, go to xtube.com and search “Sensitive Pornograph” there are two shorts (15 min. each) that are exactly like the book (which I have read) but they are waaaaaaay more graphic than Junjo. No need to turn the book sideways to figure out what’s going on those ones. :-) Enjoy.

      • Crystal says:

Tam, thanks for the info on“Sensitive Pornograph” will go check that out *g* I will let you know what I think :)
